The HomeGrown Guide was created to help bring together consumers and producers of the many foods grown in Knox County, Ohio. Central Ohioans have long enjoyed an abundance of locally grown foods: juicy fruits and berries, vine-ripened vegetables and produce, sweet corn, pure maple syrup, honey, fresh eggs, and flavorful meats.
In years past, most people engaged in agriculture, and they could supplement their homegrown food by turning to a neighbor to exchange surplus products. Today, fewer people live on farms, and the public has become accustomed to shopping for all of their needs at a supermarket. Taking advantage of local sources of fresh, nutritious foods is too often overlooked.
Giving your business to small-scale farmers benefits everyone: You can bring tasty food to your table and at the same time support a way of life that has been a main-stay of this community for generations. By taking a few moments to talk with a farmer, you’ll also get to know your neighbor and learn something about what goes into the foods you eat. HomeGrown provides a listing of farmers and merchants who carry local foodstuffs, maps to locate sellers, and information on the seasonal availability of farm products.
